Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie {with rolled oats}

As summer draws near the end for this year, I’m trying to drink as many fresh fruit smoothies as possible. Two of my favorites so far have been the strawberry spinach smoothie and the blueberry pineapple smoothie. My latest smoothie creation is kind of a combination of those two, minus the spinach and add rolled oats. The result is this strawberry blueberry smoothie with rolled oats.

Now, if you’ve never had a smoothie with rolled oats you’re probably thinking eeeewwwww! Or at least that’s what I was thinking before I tried it. I’d heard people saying it was good but I just couldn’t see how. I kept imagining thick chunks in my smoothie and that didn’t sound appealing.

But, I finally gathered up the courage and tried rolled oats in my smoothie. Okay, to be honest… I actually made it for my daughter to try first. Every Saturday she goes to special training at martial arts first thing in the morning. They run a mile and do all sorts of other conditioning. Since she doesn’t come home after that class, I bring breakfast to her in the form of a smoothie. So, I made this strawberry blueberry smoothie for her.

I didn’t try it first for fear I wouldn’t like it. Instead, I let her take the first sip. She tried it. She loved it. Next I let the little one try it. She also loved it. After it passed the two kids test, I finally gave it a go myself. And it was really, really, really good.

It’s also really filling. Especially if you add hempseeds. The rolled oats add fiber to the drink and the hempseeds give it protein. The homemade almond milk makes it creamy and the fresh fruit is just delicious.

So don’t be scared of the oats. Embrace them. Love them. Drink them.

Strawberry blueberry smoothie {with rolled oats}

Serves 1 to 2


  • 5 to 6 organic strawberries
  • 1/4 cup organic blueberries
  • 1 organic banana
  • 1/4 cup organic old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
  • Homemade almond milk
  • 3 to 4 ice cubes


  1. Place all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend to desired consistency, adding more almond milk as needed.
  3. Pour and enjoy!

    This sounds great! I will have to try it. I need some breakfast alternatives that are gluten and dairy free, and healthy (no offense to Chex, but it gets a bit old). :)
