My nine year old learned how to knit many months ago. Recently she had an idea to knit pink and black scarves and sell them to raise money for a cure for breast cancer. She had a meeting last week at Komen Northern Nevada to learn more about what she could do and where the money would go. After that meeting she wrote a report (with a little help) about what she learned and how she can help.
She said I can share her words here to help raise awareness about breast cancer and her new business venture.
Knitting for a Cure by Hayley
It was estimated that in 2010 207,090 women and 1,970 men would be diagnosed with breast cancer. Men can have breast cancer the same way women have breast cancer. Lung cancer and breast cancer are leading causes of cancer death in women in the United States. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. Starting at age 40, women are supposed to get yearly mammograms to check for lumps in the breast area. There are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors still standing with us today.
People have a race to help raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. This race is called Race for the Cure and it is in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The money goes to education, screening, treatment, and research. 75% of the money stays local in Northern Nevada and 25% goes to the main Susan G. Komen foundation.
I believe it is important to find a cure for breast cancer because it affects a lot of women. I also want to give back to my community. To help find a cure I am going to raise money for breast cancer research by selling pink and black scarves that I make. With the money raise, I will donate it to Susan G. Komen Northern Nevada. I will also volunteer at events for Komen Northern Nevada including the Race for the Cure.
Her goal is to donate $500 to Komen Northern Nevada. She already has 2 scarves finished and more yarn to make another 5 or 6. I’ll be posting more here about her business venture and if you are interested in purchasing a scarf please let me know in the comments. All pictures were taken by Hayley.
Update… All of the scarves in this post are sold but she will be making more so please leave a comment if you are interested in purchasing one so I can let you know when more are available. Thank you all so much!

What a great thing Hayley is doing! That cause is near and dear to my heart, especially after finding out my grandma had breast cancer. Thanks to diligence on her and her doctors part, they were able to take care of it. With what Hayley is doing, more people will be able to find out earlier. Good job girly!!
I’m glad to hear your grandma was able to get help in time for her breast cancer.

First, I’m in awe that she can knit so well. But to do this is such an incredible thing. I know you’re so proud.
I’ll take one! I love the pink scarf (if it’s not spoken for) otherwise if she does another sashay that would be fantastic too.
