The Garden – Part 2

For those of you that missed The Garden – Part 1 you need to go and read it to fully understand this story.

After I spent a long time getting the garden area ready last week to plant seeds I had my neighbor (aka Nanny McPurse) come over and look at it. When Nanny McPurse is not caring for my children while I am in school she is an expert gardener and a landscape designer. So, she drew up two different plans for my garden area. The first set is for the whole area and the second set is for what should be planted right now or the “spring” section.

Design for spring section of garden

On Sunday morning after a nice breakfast made by the husband (which included him teaching me the “proper” way to open a package of bacon and me making the perfect mimosa); I sent the husband, the monkey, and Nanny McPurse to Home Depot to buy soil and seeds to get the first part of the garden started. While they were at Home Depot, I got started on the harder part of gardening: toiling over a game of Scrabble and keeping an eye on the little monster.

About an hour later (about time, what took so long?) they returned home and got started working the dirt. Each person had their own shovel or raking device that I assigned them and the little monster had her bucket for dirt. Now that the delegation process was finished, I sat down inside on the computer and started my Internet exploring.

After about a half hour I decided it was probably time for me to resume my supervising of the garden activities so I set foot outside equipped with my camera.

The husband, Nanny McPurse, and the monkey were hard at work (as ordered) shoveling and raking the dirt while the little monster played in the background.

Working as ordered

Onions were laid out and planted in the ground.

Seeds were sprinkled into their respective areas.

Sprinkling the seeds

Dirt was moved around and everything was patted down to ensure optimal growth.

Patted down and ready to grow

Water was turned on and adjusted to hit the right spots.

Watering the right spots

The spring garden is now planted and it sure took a lot of time and effort on my part yet again. Gardening sure is a freaking chore.

I think I should partake in nap time with the kids.

My favorite activity

I was laughing hysterically through this post. I love that you are bossy bosserson in the garden and surfing the Internet while everyone is hard at work. Totally the way I roll as well. Ok, when you put Crazy Monkey on a plane to come and clean my house while I’m sleeping, throw your husband in there too. I love that garden wall so much! Cheers to good growth in the garden!

I can’t believe I was actually able to convince Nanny McPurse to come over and work in the garden while I did nothing. I’m not sure how long I can continue to have people work in the garden for me but I will do my best to make it last.

I think I might have to send all of us over there. My husband can work on a garden wall, the kids can clean, and we can go enjoy martinis.

Man, jealous. I wish I had a nice big garden. My daughter and I planted some red pepper seeds in a pot in our window. They have actually sprouted! Craziness, I can’t wait to eat miniature peppers.

  15. Dude, I don’t care who did the gardening – I’m impressed you have a freakin’ spring garden with real, honest-to-goodness things you can EAT! Because I am all about eating.

My oldest loves watching the seeds sprout. I’m hoping the little one doesn’t try to pull them all up.

  17. Love this! I’ve been wanting to plant a garden and need to get it started. I want to get everyone involved too! Hoping this will help my boys become better eaters :)

Gardening is fun when you get the whole family involved. I’m hoping it will get my kids to eat better too, right now they are anti-vegetables.

Nice job delegating the garden work to everyone else, you have excellent business management skills! My dad plants my vegetable garden every year and he helps me to maintain it. Fresh tomatoes are the best!

  21. Yeah. I’m not one for gardening either. Though I have recently gotton some sort of weird satisfaction out of pulling dollar weed roots out of our beds this season??…Who knows. Hubs could cement the entire yard and I wouldn’t care. ;)

    • Jessica D Torres says:

If you enjoy pulling weeds you can come over to my house anytime. The rest of my backyard is filled with them. ;)
