Normally, I tell stories about my little monster since I am home with her all day. I can see my oldest in the future upset that I didn’t talk about her much, so today it is all about my crazy monkey.
Every since my crazy monkey was little she loved books. From the day she started walking she has been bringing me books to read. We would sit on the floor, just the two of us, and read Elmo books for hours. It was tiring for me but she loved it and my life wasn’t as busy back then.
Moving forward a couple years to ages 3 and 4 we progressed to Dora books. Every night we would read a Dora book before bed. This definitely got old quick because Dora is just not as entertaining for adults as it is for kids. But we still read every night.
Kindergarten, last year, and she had to read to us every night. This part was my biggest struggle. I wanted to her to read well by herself right away, but this wasn’t really a fair expectation. So we practiced, night after night. It was hard sometimes to control my frustration when she didn’t get the words right. But instead I tried to help her rather than punish her.
Now she is in first grade. Last week she comes home with the most improved reader award for her class! Her favorite activity now is to curl up on the couch or her bed with a book and read to herself. She even reads to her little sister. I am so proud of her accomplishment in reading and it makes all of the years of sitting with her and a pile of books worth the time.
So, to my crazy monkey, when you read this in the future congratulations and I am proud of you. Love your mom (or mother as you like to call me right now).
